Our Story So Far...
Port Perry Angels – Celebrating 25 Years
On the Southern Shores of Lake Scugog, nestled in the northeast corner of the Durham Region you will find the jewel of the Trent-Severn basin, as you have reached Port Perry. While Port Perry serves as the centre of the Township of Scugog, it also serves as the HOME BASE of the Port Perry Angels. A team rich in Girls Fastpitch heritage, that has seen a multitude of success at the Provincial, National and even International levels. On any given night, down at the picturesque Joe Fowler Memorial Park you are guaranteed to hear the shouts and cheers of Angel supporters and those that come to Port Perry hoping to steal a win from the fan favourites. But while the win or loss never is for certain, what is, is that you will find this club’s leader, teacher and father at every game to cheer on his favourite team and make sure that ALL the girls are having fun.
Port Perry has been very fortunate to have a champion such as Rick Finlay, who has been with the club from the very beginning in 1991. In 1992, Rick was asked by the Club’s founder Don Hurst to become the club’s President. Since that time, Rick started the Angels with one Intermediate Women’s team and will this year field as many as a dozen teams, ranging from Mite to Senior Womens. In Rick’s 40+ years of coaching, he has celebrated a number of National titles with his Midget, Junior and Senior Women’s teams. After his Senior Women’s National title in 1991, Rick’s team was selected to represent Canada at the World Invitationals, in Beijing, China. Later in his coaching career, Rick would also take his Midget and Junior teams to Sydney, Australia. The Angels were well represented in this Pre-Olympic Invitational in 2000, and made lasting
friendships with their hosts Team Australia.
Besides coaching the Angels, Rick was also called on to coach Team Ontario at various times for the Canadian Summer Games. Each time he was called on he managed to help the girls bring home Gold (3) or a Silver (1). In his spare time Rick also coach es the Seneca Sting College Girls team and heads in to his 30th year with the team. His tireless efforts have helped the team to high rankings in the OCCA.
Over the years, and through his various organizations, Rick has manage to help produce:
- League Champions
- Provincial Champions
- National Champions
- Eastern Canadian Champions
- Olympic Team Players
- Team Canada Players
- US Scholarship Athletes
But in the end, every summer brings Rick back to his favourite stomping grounds, on the red clay dirt of Joe Fowler Park. He wants to know the name of every player that puts on an Angels jersey, because he wants to cheer their name, when he sees that something special that happens on the field.
While each win, title and Championship is special to Rick, his drive is to rebuild the sport in Canada. In any conversation you have with Rick, he will tell you, “We need to get these girls playing. End of Story”.
