Dameon Halstead is a Youth Activist. His passion for childrens goes back to the time when he volunteered as a Youth Leader. He facilitated design and materialized camp activities for children in numerous communities. Dameon's passion for children's education grew as he did. He felt driven to do smoothing to help the youth so he became a member of a non-profit organization, located in Ajax, that provides tutoring, sports activities and various classes to youth. Dameon is now part of several organizations that thrive to make positive changes in our society. He believes in the education system and sees a huge room for improvement; and believes that Government authority and school boards should realize that they are on the same side and that their goals are identical. There is a gap that needs to be filled when it comes to school, board and government relations. We must remember that good education is a right, not a privilege and that we should aim to have all our schools at the same high standard level while taking into consideration that each school and each community have their own challenges and concerns. Dameon believes that an interactive plan could be implemented in a way that addresses community concerns, reallocate funds to where it is needed, ensure fair and transparent fund distribution, address teachers' concerns and ensure the involvement of schools, staff and the community in the process. Dameon realizes that there are major challenges to confront such as overwhelming school infrastructure, combating hate and racism, and ensuring that youth stay in class and maintaining the quality of education. Dameon believes that our main mission must be to ensure that our students reach their optimal potential.
We live in a first-world country and certainly, our education system should reflect that. For us to remain a first-world country, we need to have a first-class education system. When we build and maintain a solid foundation for our education infrastructure, we are building a better country and a better quality of life for ourselves. Government, boards of education, community and staff must work hand in hand to reach that goal. We need to develop our communication, tolerance and be open to ideas of others build a better and stronger education system.
Some of the major issues that need to be addressed urgently are:
1. MENTAL HEALTH
Children must be able to get the right support & resources that are needed for them to succeed. Help should be extended to the families as well. For it to work, the approach must be professional and holistic, and both must be given a fair chance. Children must have positive feedback. We should eliminate the negative connotation around mental health. Mental health hotlines should be utilized and kids should be encouraged to use them.
2. We must have resilient and adequate resources for students, family & staff.
3. We want to keep kids at school while ensuring their health and safety
4. We need to ensure that there is greater accountability to parents, student and the community through transparent, proactive, responsible and reliable leadership that provide the necessary supervision and guidance.
5. We must improve the physical Infrastructure of our schools including addressing the need for proper and modern HVAC systems and proper ventilation
6. Achievement and student successes is the main goal
