I’m Avril and I am running for DDSB trustee, representing Ajax. My family and I have proudly called Ajax home for the past six years.
I graduated from University of Toronto with an Honours BA, political science specialist. Continuing in the path of my studies, I started a career in the public service where I have worked for the past decade. My current role includes examining and dismantling systemic barriers in staffing systems & policies within my department.
Having graduated from the Ontario public school system myself, I have a strong desire to see every child succeed in our public schools. As a current DDSB parent of two, I have the privilege and intimate understanding of how policy impacts our students here and now.
In my role as a community member looking to effect change, I have been actively involved in the following:
· School Community Council (SCC) member · DDSB Compendium of Action for Black Student Success Revision Committee · Planning Committee for DBEN’s inaugural “And Still I Rise” Afrocentric Heritage Program · Urban Alliance on Race Relations: Coalition for Racial Equity in Education (former parent advocate)
-Address the learning gap & adverse mental health effects exacerbated by the pandemic through a collaborative approach supporting students, educators, families and community members.
-Advocate for marginalized students and address systemic barriers that have historically disadvantaged Black & Indigenous students in order to challenge disparate outcomes in learning environments.
-Enhance and expand special education resources and supports to enable all DDSB students the opportunity to thrive.
-Increase engagement with families, educators, and the community, recognizing the different voices that play a part in setting the conditions that will provide a high-quality education for every student to reach their full potential in school and in life.
